At about 2.45pm on this day the webmaster was driving the service train North
from Whiteman Village Junction on
the BBR when the Guard applied the train brake bringing us to a halt just prior
to entering Kangaroo Flats Station. On arrival at the locomotive the Guard
advised that there was a fire in the Park near the southern section of the loop
and that the train should terminate at Kangaroo Flats and return to Whiteman
Village Junction, all further services being cancelled.
These pics are taken mostly from WVJ with a few at Mussel Pool. It would
appear that the Mussel Pool to WVJ section will be closed temporarily due to the
fire crossing the line, over about, a 1km distance of the railway. Minor damage
was done to the railway and the tramway. On the railway there is a need only for
about 15 sleepers to be replaced which were spread out over the area where the
fire crossed the line.
Services are expected to resume on the Mussel Pool Branch in approx a
weeks time.
Services will still operate on the Bushland Loop in the interim.
After the event it would appear that about 500 Hectares of bushland was burnt
out during the fire which started near the Mussel Pool picnic area and quickly
moved North East through the scrubland towards Whiteman Village burning all
within its path. The fire skirted the eastern side of the village coming right
up to the back of the motor museum, Tractor museum and the Wildlife park, before
continuing in a NE direction towards Lord St and Gnangara Rd. The fire was
contained around midnight. 3 vehicles and several small sheds were lost in the
fire.
