24/3/08 Good Friday was a busy day on the BBR - the regular night work party elected to come in early and have a day of activity instead of during the evening - the day was warm and some perhaps were wishing that they had stayed with meeting for the evening, however the day went on, and much got done. We had an
excellent attendance with over 23 members in attendance, some Another crew set about cutting sleepers on the sawmill with Tamper Dave leading the charge - approx 75 sleepers were trimmed to size before the saw blade was determined to be blunt. Further preparation and stacking was also carried out. A break for lunch was made and the crew sat down to a lovely feast of BBQ fish and salads prepared by Derek's wife - the lovely Lee Anne. Chef Daniel did a pretty good job cooking the fish too. A resounding 3 cheers was made in appreciation.
The regular 4 car service train hauled by Rosalie, swelled to a 5 car consist just after lunch when the party coach (full of happy party goers) was added to the train for a full journey of the railway. Other duties carried out were loading of the LA ballast wagon and loading of steel sleepers onto the QBB flat wagon. A couple of steel sleepers were also inserted at the throat of the yard.
Betty
Thompson had her boiler cladding modified so that at the next major inspection
we shouldn't need to remove the cab and the many other fittings. Betty also had
some of her Lagging A busy day was had by all - thank you to all members who helped to make this day a success

Sleeper Dropping continued on Friday 14th Feb with a further 300 sleepers dropped along the line by the crew before darkness set in. Approx 600 timber sleepers have now been placed line side between Mussel Pool, Whiteman Junction and Kangaroo Flats in preparation for the start of the Skilled Rail teams. Now there is a need to drop quite a number of steel sleepers once the remaining timber sleepers which have been loaded onto the QBB are dropped. The Regular Friday Evening crew will commence early this Good Friday with an intended start time of 10am. Members are requested to contact Derek Ruston and offer any assistance possible, as we now need to keep ahead of the sleeper insertion rate of the Skilled Rail crews. It would be nice to see some members other than the regulars to help out.

9/3/08 A BIG update this week One of our best Friday work evenings was held on the 7th of Feb with 15 members in attendance. Lots got done too and the evening disappeared so quickly that a bit of prodding was required to get members to pack up and go home as they were so involved in what they were doing.
Most of the jobs centred around getting organised for the nearing Skilled Rail project which will commence from the 17th of March at Mussel Pool. About 5pm Planet #1 was coupled to the QBB flat wagon which had been loaded with sleepers and it trundled off to Mussel Pool station platform road where selected dropping of sleepers commenced heading towards Whiteman Junction. Later the train returned and the QBB was loaded again. It then headed off to Kangaroo Flats where dropping of sleepers commenced from the Wig Wag crossing towards WVJ. The train returning to the depot just after nightfall. Further cut sleepers were prepared and loaded onto the QBB during the evening to ensure a good start for the next drop session. Other related jobs included retrieval of Blowhard (Mobile Air Compressor) from WVJ & D33 (goods van) for servicing, clean up and preparation for use by the Skilled team. Other jobs being worked on during the evening include - Sanding of the Perry cab ceiling timbers by Richard. Simon, Trevor and Greg continued with maintenance to the Fowler brake rigging - whilst cousins Michael and Andrew commenced wiring of the Dorman Planet electrical systems. Thanks to all who help out on Friday evenings and also to Tamper Dave and the midweek crew who have worked very hard cutting and preparing sleepers. Other News Safe working course Another safe working course was held at the Railway on March 2. The course was conducted by Daniel with help from Bob and Derek. Six senior members, Trevor, John, Ken, Peter, Greg, Ross and two junior members Morgan and Samuel attended. In addition Harrison came along as a refresher. Congratulations to all participants as everyone passed and are now able to start progressing through the ranks at BBR.
DW 1190 Arrives on the BBR Over the last couple of months BBR member Richard Simpson has been negotiating with the Main Roads Department with regard to the safe removal of two ex WAGR goods vans from a property in Caversham. After a closer inspection of the 2 vans it was decided that only one was in good enough condition to be moved and that the other van would be stripped of all useful timber and fittings. The MRD donated the two wagon bodies to the BBR and organised for DW1190 to be moved to the BBR Mussel Pool depot free of charge. BBR rollingstock dept members have had their eye on these vans for some time now but had been unable to acquire them until more recent times when expansion plans for the Roe Hwy were put into place requiring demolition of the properties in its path. DW1190 is one of 75 wagons built by Gloucester RCW Co. to a New Zealand design in 1895 - Classified D and then later reclassified DW when it was transferred to use as a workmans van. It was written off in the late 1960's and was put to use as a grounded body on a property on Middle Swan Rd Caversham along with another D van of the same pattern as BBR's D33 which is slightly larger and has a higher roof profile The 2nd D van Number 4174 was believed to have been originally built in 1896 for the Great Southern Railway and was re-bodied as late as 1958 and not written off until 1971. It was found to be in a very poor condition having been seriously attacked by termites over the years and it was decided that it could not easily be moved and would be demolished on site for spare parts. Member Richard Simpson then spent 2-3 days removing the Doors, handrails, Tongue and groove side boards, the floor boards , steel door runner rails, steel structural supports and most importantly the builders plate.
Thanks go to the MRD for donating these two vans to the BBR. Gary Player from Main Roads was enthusiastic to see a van saved for future preservation on the BBR. Ron Forknall was a prime mover in the project and organised the removal of the vans and then assisted on the removal day to ensure that all went smoothly with the lifting, cartage and delivery to the BBR workshops.. Thanks to R&L Hiab Services for the free delivery and supply of Driver Paul for the truck. Thanks to Barney Brown from Dept of Planning & also Rich More from Swan Shire. Thanks also BBR member Richard Simpson who was responsible in organising and liasing with the departments involved in the project on behalf of BBR. Ross Parker & Lindsay Watson also contributed information
5/3/08 On Friday 29th Feb we had another great evening with all the sleepers we have onsite, de-plated and stacked, ready for grading and cutting by our brilliant mid week crew. We should have 800 wood sleepers ready to position along the line side by Friday 7th March. Commencing on Monday March 17, Skilled Rail Services will begin replacing sleepers on the Railway. The project is expected to take 6 weeks, weekdays only. The
next new lot of ex PTA sleepers have started arriving ex Kewdale.
24/2/08 There is always something happening at BBR. Friday 22nd of Feb saw another good turnout of the regular crew Peter, Liam, Neil, Derek, Tony, Greg, Samual, Trevor, Simon and Kieran along with new member "Ross" and long standing foundation member "Charlie" - good to see both along for the evening. Once again the project was removal of sleeper plates and the crew steamed along with the job this week with a best ever total of 176 sleepers being unpacked, de-plated and restacked by the end of the night. Other jobs got on with was - some maintenance work on the Fowler which has some issues with its brake rigging, keeping Trevor, Simon and Greg busy. Resident sound effects guru, Kieran got busy and replaced the whistle on Ashley with a much nicer sounding brass air whistle before getting the last coat of protector paint onto the Perry boiler.
During Friday 8th of Feb the signals branch erected the Bathgate indicator at Whiteman Village Junction as well as took the opportunity to carry out some maintenance to the Wig Wag signal on the Rally Road Xing. Thanks to the Perth Electric Tramway Society for use of their cherry picker to assist with this work.
19/2/08 Sadly another BBR member has passed away
Other News We
had another fantastic evening last Fri with 120 sleepers de-plated and that
included a 2hr break down on the pulling machine, but with Greg’s magic touch
our puller was repaired and modified and is working better than ever, So this
week we should smash our record and get closer to our target. Some more modifications were also carried out on the Planet to keep her in good condition. Members are requested to come along on Friday evenings and assist with this important project. Country member Rudi came along on the 16/02/08 all the way from Pemberton - It would be nice to see some of our much closer metropolitan members come along and help out too.
9/2/08 Friday 8/2/08 had another good turn up of the regular Friday night crew who got on with the jobs at hand. As it was a cool evening much was done on the sleeper project with approx 100 sleepers sorted, de-plated & stacked ready for the midweek crew to put through the saw for sizing and then treatment. Work continued on the Perry boiler which got its first coat of special paint, as it has now been inspected by the boiler inspector and been given a clean bill of health. Reassembly of the loco can now begin. The diesel loco's also got a bit more general maintenance carried out. The Bathgate Indicator was also installed at WVJ station and is now ready for use.
Bathgate Indicator The Bathgate pull-down indicator donated to BBR by Puffing Billy Railway in Victoria has recently been refurbished at the BBR's Falcon workshops and is now ready for installation at Whiteman Village Junction station. The Bathgates were used extensively in the UK, NSW and Vic - the most famous place being "Under the Clocks" at Flinders St Station. Similar forms of indicators were used on the platforms at Perth City station. The only other known working Bathgate, is at Belgrave on Puffing Billy. Thanks go to Bob Baker for his restoration work, Peter Monkhouse who supplied replacement sheet metal and Puffing Billy who donated it.
Friday 1/2/08 saw a good start to February with 13 members in attendance to assist with the jobs needing attention. The main project on the go was de plating of the second hand PTA sleepers in stock to enable them to be run through the sawmill for sizing and then use in the track upgrade. This requires around 1500 timber sleepers which will be used in conjunction with the steel sleepers. No Track - No Trains. Track work is the most important maintenance requirement for the BBR as it is necessary to keep the trains rolling. Meanwhile Simon got on with adjusting the brakes on Planet #1 as well as some general maintenance to this locomotive which has operated almost everyday during school holidays from the start of this period in December 07 to the start of February 08. It is estimated to have travelled around 800km during this period. David spent the evening finishing off cleaning remaining difficult areas of the Perry boiler for its final open inspection which takes place on the 2/02/08. The majority of this work had been completed by Derek and Neil midweek using grinders with wire brush attachments, leaving only a couple of difficult to get at spots that Dave sorted out. Trevor and Michael kept busy with a bit of maintenance to the Crane and the Backhoe - machinery which is often the last to get a bit of attention unless something fails. Keep up the good work everybody - All assistance welcomed. Click here for Archived News January 2008 - December 2007
