Ng 15 Steam Locomotives 118 & 123
On 21st of April 1985 the Safocean Nederburg
sailed into the port of Fremantle, Western Australia from Port Elizabeth, South
Africa.
Witnessed by a small gathering of WALRPA
members who had taken the day off work, Two ex SAR NG15 2-8-2 steam locomotives
- numbers 118 & 123 were unloaded from the cargo hold onto trucks bound for
Whiteman Park.
On the 16th of July 1986 after much work, Ng 15
#123 passed its boiler test, entering service on the BBR on the 21st of
September 1986 when the Bushland Loop, Trade Village & Electric Trams were
officially opened & launched.
Ng 123 worked most Sundays and Public Holidays
during the winter periods until the end of steam season 1995 when it was
withdrawn from service for overhaul.
Ng 118 entered service on Enthusiast Day 15th
October 1994. This day and the 1995 Enthusiast Day saw Ng's 118 & 123 double
heading on the BBR in what was a moving sight for those who had witnessed the
delivery of these scrapped locomotives back in 1985
118 continued in use until 2003 when it also
was withdrawn from service for overhaul.
Currently 118 is still out of use.
Ng 123 returned to service on Mothers Day 10th
May 2007 when it hauled its first passenger carrying train consisting of four
coaches from Whiteman Village Junction to Mussel Pool station after 12
years out of service . It performed well throughout the day and was popular with
visitors to Whiteman Park.
On the 20th of May Ng 123 participated in its
very first Friends of Thomas the Tank Engine event day. It had only ever been on
display at this popular event, as it was retired from service in 1995 - 1 year
prior to BBR's first FOTTE day
